What Is Outpatient Drug Rehab?

Outpatient drug rehab is a broad term for a collection of rehab programs in which you do not live full time inside a rehab facility but still receive treatment for addiction. Outpatient programs can be intensive, for hours every day like a full-time job, or it can be more flexible so you can work or go to school and attend appointments and groups afterward.

Although a severe addiction to drugs like opioids requires inpatient care before outpatient treatment is an option, it is possible to rehabilitate fully in an outpatient program if you have a milder substance use issue caught in its early stages.

At Muse Treatment, we use a three-pronged treatment approach for our outpatient clients:

1. Case Management

Our case management team is a group of people who can help you fill in the life skills gaps you may have due to addiction. Substance use disorders can become barriers to employment for many reasons. You may not have held a full-time job before because working was not a priority in your life.

Living independently involves working, keeping to a schedule, and organization. Self-sufficiency and financial independence are critical for you to move on with your life without needing to depend on others. Employment has other benefits as well, like:

  • keeping your mind and hands busy
  • meeting new people outside your regular social group
  • developing social skills
  • giving you a structure to each day

During our outpatient drug rehab programs in Los Angeles, we can help you with job-searching skills like interviewing and resume building. We provide you with practice scenarios to feel confident when you walk into your interview. We also offer educational and vocational counseling if you are unsure about where you want your life to go after rehab.

2. Therapy

At Muse Treatment, we have a combination of group and individual therapy programs that will get to the underlying causes of addiction and help you change your behaviors and mindset to help you stay sober for the long run. You will learn to heal relationships and work through life’s problems using healthy coping tools.

Group therapy is a place where you can meet your peers and see how they deal with their problems. You will gain new problem-solving strategies, brainstorm with others, and use the group as a sounding board. Listening to others speak about their own experiences with addiction can put your life into perspective and help you release some of the tension, guilt, and fear you may be holding on to.

One-on-one therapy is an ongoing conversation between you and a therapist. You will meet with them to speak about issues you may be having, work on improving your overall quality of life, and get to the root of your addiction so that you can heal from the inside out. A therapist can also help you learn skills in stress management, healthy coping strategies, and handling difficult situations, and they can help you work through feelings of depression or hopelessness.

3. 12-Step Integration

The 12-Step approach to addiction treatment has helped millions of people stop using drugs and alcohol by giving themselves over to a higher power, acknowledging their lack of control over their compulsive behavior. You will be paired with a sponsor you will contact when times get tough for peer support and accountability. This program can help you take stock and regain control over your life. 12-Step programs have proven successful for those with addictions who want to incorporate spirituality into a holistic healing experience from addiction. At Muse Treatment, through this three-pronged approach, we can help you heal your mind, body, and spirit with our integrated outpatient program that combines physical health care with mental and spiritual wellness.

The Difference Between an Outpatient and Inpatient Rehab

Everybody’s rehab experience is unique, and at Muse Treatment, we will help you decide whether you should spend time in inpatient rehab before moving on to outpatient care.

Inpatient drug rehab is usually a minimum of 30 days. You would live inside a rehab facility, with structured days filled with group and induvial therapy, medical appointments, holistic care, classes, and other treatments. You will stay in a comfortable residence, surrounded by peers and a supportive community away from your usual temptations and stress so you can focus on healing your body, mind, and spirit. Medical care is available 24 hours a day, making inpatient rehab especially beneficial for those with severe addictions and mental health conditions or those with a high risk of relapsing.

Outpatient drug rehab is a much more flexible option, in which you can live at home and come for treatment at a time that works best for you. Your frequency and intensity of visits can be altered at any time to suit your needs as they evolve. Outpatient rehab is almost always recommended after inpatient rehab. It is a good option for anybody who: can not take time away from work or other responsibilities, as long as you:

  • are not experiencing physical withdrawal symptoms
  • have somewhere supportive of staying and a good support group
  • are willing and able to get yourself to all your groups and appointments on your own
  • are highly motivated in your recovery
  • are not deemed likely to relapse

Outpatient Rehab Program Options

There are two different types of outpatient drug rehab programs offered at Muse Treatment’s outpatient drug rehab programs in Los Angeles:

The Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is our most intensive outpatient program. It is a step down from inpatient care in that you do not live inside the facility 24 hours a day, but you do commute back in for full days of treatment. You can live at home or in a sober house, with up to seven days a week of groups, seminars, counseling, therapy, and medical appointments. The PHP provides:

  • Expert guidance from staff, with a focus on your coping skills and accountability
  • A balance between clinical care and personal responsibility
  • A less-overwhelming way to move into outpatient care from inpatient care or a detox program
  • A way to practice your newly learned recovery skills in real-life scenarios with full support behind you

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a much more flexible and customizable program than the PHP that allows you to return to full or part-time work or school and take care of your other responsibilities at home, in your family or your community. You can keep your regular daily routine, adding appointments with therapists and medical professionals on evenings or weekends.

As the IOP provides a lot of freedom, many people benefit from living in a sober living home during their time in IOP to improve their odds of remaining in recovery. At Muse Treatment, we also provide many opportunities for you to build your own sober support system with peers and members of your community, along with our professional therapists and counselors, as we know that a healthy support system will give you an alternative to turn to when life presents challenges or temptations.

How Long Is Outpatient Drug Rehab?

The best thing about outpatient drug rehab programs in Los Angeles is that it is a flexible program that can last as long as needed. There is no specified end date, and you can return to a Muse Treatment Center at any time for groups or peer support. You can also schedule an appointment with a doctor or therapist. We are here for you, so you never have to be alone in your recovery from drug addiction.
