Transgender Drug Rehab in Los Angeles

Los Angeles drug rehabs are very aware that they need to meet the needs of people from a wide variety of demographics.  That’s why at Muse Treatment we are accepting of people from all walks of life, including being LGBTQ friendly.  LGBTQ individuals are more likely than their non-LGBTQ counterparts to need addiction treatment therapy or mental health treatment programs.  This is in part due to the stress caused by dealing with discrimination on top of the normal weight of modern life. Alcohol and drug addiction treatment professionals are constantly having to adjust what they treat and how they treat patients and being open to people from every community is a big part of what we do every day at Muse Recovery.

At Muse Recovery we offer many different treatment programs for substance use disorders.  Some of the options we offer include outpatient programs, dual diagnosis treatment, drug and alcohol detox, residential treatment, and specialized levels of care like Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP).  At Muse, we know that an addiction treatment program works best when it is specifically customized to the individual client’s alcohol and drug recovery needs. If you or one of your loved ones is struggling with addiction, please give us a call today.  We understand that LGBTQ individuals including transgender people may be even more reticent when it comes to asking for help wih drugs and alcohol. We treat each client with confidentiality before, during and after their recovery programs.

Finding A Transgender Friendly Rehab

LGBTQ individuals face an array of everyday and long-term factors that can cause them to be more vulnerable to substance use disorders, addiction and mental health issues. This means that recovery programs need to provide addiction treatment therapy that LGBTQ people are comfortable with in order to be successful.  It’s always important to ask as many questions as you need to when you are choosing a drug rehab program so that you or your loved ones are comfortable with the environment, people, and treatment options.  It’s important that any addiction and mental health treatment program you choose understands where you are coming from and what other issues you may be dealing with in your life in order to provide the right care for you.  At Muse Treatment, we have been working with LGBTQ individuals for many years and understand the challenges there are for alcohol and drug addiction treatment in the transgender community.  If you have any concerns about our ability to meet any special needs you may have, please ask one of our addiction treatment therapy specialists regarding the details of any of our facilities, levels of care or other aspects of the options we offer.

Drug Abuse in the Trans Community

Drug abuse in the transgender community is more prevelant than in non-LGBTQ demographics due to a number of reasons.  First, higher rates of drug and alcohol addiction are common in the transgender community due to being part of a minority that often is denied services, even in high income countries like the United States.  This can lead to stress, substance abuse and mental health issues.  No one ever needs to go through drug or alcohol addiction on their own but members of the transgender community often feel issolated to begin with and asking for help can sometimes add more stress, as opposed to alleviating it.  Trangsgender people also get a double dose of discrimination, first by being members of the overall LGBTQ community and then by being Trans, too.  At Muse Treatment, we can help you or your loved ones navigate all of the issues that LGBTQ individuals face when it comes to addiction and mental health treatment.  This includes a specialized program for those dealing with a dual diagnosis.  Dual diagnosis treatment is necessary when someone is struggling with addiction in addition to a mental health disorder like depression or anxiety.

Challenges in Addiction Treatment for Transgender Community

One of the challenges when it comes to substance abuse treatment for people within the transgender community is that the being trangender is still misunderstood, even in the United States.  It’s important for anyone to know that when they need addiction treatment therapy or care for mental health issues that their personal choices and beliefs are going to be respected.  Everyone seeking treatment for drug addiction or any other type of medical careshold be able to do it without fear of judgment or worse. No matter whether that means residential care, outpatient treatment, dual diagnosis treatment, or a specialized program like our Intensive Outpatient plans, discrimnation of any kind does not exist at Muse Treatment.

Drug Rehab Accommodations for Transgender Patients

As the need for substance abuse and mental health treatment have grown throughout the years, specific drug rehab for LGBTQ inldividuals has become more popular, too. One of the ways this is accomplished is by having staff members that identify with people within the demographic be a part of alcohol and drug rehab programs for LGBTQ individuals.  This can also mean drug and alcohol treatment personnel having specialized training for working with the specific issues that LGBTQ people face.  In general, this is not a new concept for addiction treatment program professionals.  People of different genders, races, social backgrounds, and many other factors that make up our population in the United States affect the specific issues one group or another has with drugs and alcohol.  Drug and alcohol addiction affects men and women in different ways.  Men and women turn to alcohol and drugs for different reasons, too. These two factors go for LGBTQ people as well.

Family therapy programs can be a good option for transgender patients.  This allows their loved ones to be involved which can help in several ways.  First, it can demonstrate the specific issues that LGBTQ people have with drug and alcohol addiction and why it happens.  Also, loved ones can see all of the ways alcohol and drugs have affected the life of the patient.  Additionally, family therapy programs can show loved ones how hard an individual is working to move beyond a life negatively impacted by substance abuse.

How Drug Rehab Works

Drug rehab is often a multi phase proposition in order for someone to successfully enter and maintain a life in addiction recovery.  Residential treatment for alcohol or drug addiction often begins with drug detox.  Drug detox is the process where all of the substances and associated toxins are removed from a person’s body in a safe, controlled environment.  Withdrawal symptoms are often not life threatening, but can easily be severe enough to cause a person to give up and go back to using drugs or alcohol if they do not have the proper support.

Once someone has detoxed, they can move onto behavioral therapy.  This can occur in a substance abuse treatment center.  A residential treatment program is a great way to establish a drug-free lifestyle before returning to everyday responsibilities.  Residential substance abuse treatment programs are typically 30, 60, or 90 days but can also be flexible or last longer, depending on the needs of the person struggling with addiction.  Life skills and relapse prevention are two things typically covered as part of inpatient treatment.

From there, it’s very important that an individual beginning their recovery take part in an outpatient treatment program.  Outpatient rehab is flexible and can be done on a schedule that works well for the client and allows them to work, go to school and take care of other life responsibilities.  After inpatient treatment, an Intensive Outpatient Program, or IOP, can be a helpful way to transition back to everyday life.  An IOP includes more days and more hours of behavioral therapy, but it still allows a person to be in their home at night and go to work and school, too.

Everyone’s journey to recovery is going to be different and working with an addiction and mental health disorder treatment organization like Muse that provides customized levels or care for all of our clients is an important part of the process.

Drug Rehab Aftercare for Transgender Patients

Aftercare program support groups can be one of the most important factors regarding longterm recovery, including for trangender patients.  Often based on the twelve steps, alcohol and drug rehab aftercare organizations are available everywhere.  Two of the most famous are Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, both of which have meetings and support groups across the country and beyond.  There are also many other aftercare support groups that aim towards a specific group of people, like Gay and Sober which was created to be there fro people in the LGBTQ community.  These groups are excellent because their aim is to help as many people as possible to maintain their longterm recovery and live a life free of drugs and alcohol.
