Substance use disorder is a serious illness that can afflict anybody, from all walks of life. It is a disease that affects your brain and behavior so you cannot stop using the drugs without withdrawal symptoms, cravings, and psychological discomfort.Addiction can start by using a drug experimentally, or by taking certain prescription drugs. You may enjoy the feeling of the drug and begin using it more and more often, or you may need to take the drug to feel normal after a while.

Addiction can affect your lifestyle in ways you may not expect, and you may find yourself doing risky activities while under the influence, doing things to get the drug that you wouldn’t normally do (stealing, sex work, etc), and missing obligations like work and school, or social activities due to drug use.

Through Muse Treatment’s detox and inpatient rehabilitation programs, you will get clean through an integrated combination of therapy, counseling, clinical care (including a medically assisted treatment for detox), physical health, and rest.

Addiction is not instantly cured by going through a rehab program though. There are behavioral, psychological, and social aspects to drug use that will still exist. This is where outpatient treatment comes into play.

Drug Rehab That Allows You to Still Go to Work & School

You can still go to work or school while in an outpatient rehab program. At Muse Addiction Treatment Center, we have customizable treatment plans that can work around any schedule.

Once your inpatient treatment has completed at Muse Addiction Treatment Center, we can set up a customized outpatient aftercare program that will suit what you want your life to look like. If you want to go to school or work a full-time job, there is an intensive outpatient program, where you can maintain your normal daily schedule and still receive group and individual therapy. You will attend group therapies, and have access to our alumni network, so there will be many opportunities to forge positive, sober friendships.

There is also a virtual version of the IOP for people who have completed residential treatment and live too far away from any Muse treatment centers to attend groups and therapy. The virtual IOP takes place through a telehealth platform, where you will meet with therapists and counsellors online.

As these intensive programs provide a lot of freedom in your schedule, making your days less structured, they are best for people who have a stable home to live in and a solid social network of sober-friendly people. The idea is for you to take on responsibility for your actions, and using your new recovery skills, create a life for yourself that is sustainable and realistic, without the use of drugs or alcohol.

If you want to partake in an outpatient program like this, but do not have a stable living environment you may choose to move into a sober living home as you return to your life as a sober person. These are homes with a structured environment and rules you must follow like drug testing, curfews, rules around guests, and house chores. In many of these homes you can come and go as you please, as long as you follow their guidelines.

Benefits of Outpatient Drug Rehab

The benefits of outpatient drug rehab include having a continued safety net of sober connections, who can remind you what you learned in residential rehab, support you through tough times, and will understand what you are going through.

Moving to an outpatient program will give you the flexibility to return to responsibilities like work and family, with continued support from our staff, through meetings and therapy. You will have a support network as you apply your newly learned coping mechanisms to real-life scenarios, and you will have opportunities to create new friendships and try out new activities that foster a sober lifestyle.

When you are in outpatient treatment, you will never be alone in your recovery. You can also help or mentor others in their recovery, giving you a sense of purpose.

What to Expect During Outpatient Rehab?

When you leave inpatient rehab, you will not be immediately thrown to the wolves. As part of our integrated rehab program, we will help you smoothly transfer over to an outpatient program. There are some aftercare options you can choose from, including:

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) – this is an intermediary step between rehab and living on your own. You can spend all day every day in treatment if you want, depending on your comfort level, and then go home for the night. This is a good balance between clinical care and personal responsibility. You will be fully supported by professionals as you use your coping skills for real-life situations.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) – best for people who are motivated in their recovery, with a stable living space, the IOP is a flexible program that works around your work or school schedule. The IOP is best for people who have a healthy support system at home, or live in a sober living home.

Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (VIOP) – this is the virtual version of the IOP, where therapy and counselling take place online.

Recovery is an individual process that manifests differently for everybody. At Muse, patients are encouraged to remain in aftercare treatment for as long as they need, so they are supported and feel confident in their ability to succeed on their own.
