Top-Rated Alcohol Detox Program for Residents of Oakland
Addiction to alcohol is diagnosed when your pattern of use becomes a problem, and you feel a mild to severe psychological or physical need to drink alcohol. With Muse Treatment, Oakland, California residents have access to the best alcohol detox program available.
Some signs you may be an alcoholic include alcohol cravings, drinking in secret or in the morning, and being unable to stop drinking or control how much you drink once you get started. Prioritizing alcohol over responsibilities, family, friends, or your usual interests could be another sign. You may experience uncontrollable mood swings and irritability, and you may continue drinking even when it begins to cause problems with your health, family, and financial situation.
Alcohol is a substance you should not attempt to quit “cold turkey”. The withdrawal symptoms can quickly escalate into dangerous territory, and even become life threatening if not overseen and treated by medical professionals. Even in a best case scenario, detoxing from alcohol can be difficult and uncomfortable.
- Some factors that increase your risk during withdrawal include:
- Co-occurring physical or mental health conditions
- Heavy drinking for any amount of time, or prolonged periods of regular drinking
- Abnormal liver function, low platelet counts, or low potassium and sodium levels
- A history of delirium tremens or seizures during detox
- Using other drugs while drinking
- Dehydration
- Older age during detox

What is Alcohol Detox Like?
Alcohol detox can be difficult, or even dangerous, so at Muse Addiction Treatment Center, we strongly recommend using our Medically Assisted Treatment (MAT).
MAT takes place in a home-like environment, with expert staff who have been highly trained. You are given a combination of medications, behavioral therapy, clinical care, and counselling to help you overcome the physical and psychological effects of quitting drinking. Introducing counselling early in the process has proven to be important, as emotions and thoughts may come up unexpectedly. This “whole patient” approach will improve your chances of a long-term, sustained recovery, without relapse.
Some factors that may affect your detox timeline and process include the duration and severity of the addiction, your family history, your genetic makeup, the amount you were drinking at one time, and any co-occurring physical or psychiatric conditions.
Following detox you will move into residential care, a new environment, living amongst peers going through a similar experience to you. This is where the work begins. Through a combination of therapy, physical health and nutrition counselling, group activities, and skills training, you will learn new ways of living that are healthy for you, and will help you live a new self-directed lifestyle.
What to Expect During Detox?
When you first come into a Muse Addiction Treatment Center facility, we will interview you to find out more about your life, your goals, and your addiction. We screen for mental and physical health conditions to find out if we need to give you a dual diagnosis treatment, and we show you around the place, to ensure you feel comfortable and ready to enter detox.
Once you are ready, you will check in to our detox clinic. Withdrawal symptoms from alcohol can begin to show up a few hours after your last drink, peak at around 72 hours, and then taper off for another few days. Symptoms can become very uncomfortable, which is why we offer our Medically Assisted Treatment (MAT) program. FDA-approved medications are prescribed by a doctor and given by our clinical staff to help you feel more comfortable, sleep better, and get through the worst of it as easily as possible. We believe that nobody should have to suffer unnecessarily. The medications given will not get you high or cause another addiction.
MAT is an integrated treatment, meaning we also treat the psychological components of addiction. We offer counselling to help with any unwanted emotions or thoughts, and to get you through the psychological complexities of detox. Dual diagnosis, behavioral health, and clinical care are used in tandem to treat the whole patient, not just the addiction. Your therapy and counselling regimen will continue into one of our inpatient rehabilitation programs, followed by an extended outpatient and alumni program, which can continue for as long as you need it to.
You will be comfortable in our Muse guest rooms. There are full-sized beds, the food is prepared on-site by a chef who can accommodate any dietary needs you may have, and snacks are available around the clock. Pets are allowed, there are TVs in the rooms, and we have exercise areas, games, and movie nights. Smoking is allowed outside or in designated areas. We want you to be able to feel as at home as possible during your stay with us.
How Long is Detox?
The timeline for detox varies for every person, because everybody has different histories, health issues, and personal goals. In general, mild symptoms will show up between two to six hours after you take your last drink. They will be at their worst at around 72 hours, and then you will gradually begin to feel better after that.
In the first 6 to 12 hours, you will likely experience mild symptoms like headaches, nausea, insomnia and stomach pain. From 12 to 48 hours, symptoms can escalate, and somebody experiencing serious alcohol withdrawal symptoms may begin hallucinating, sweating uncontrollably, and even having seizures.
It is usually between 48 and 72 hours is where symptoms can become life-threatening if untreated. Fever, confusion, rapid heart rate, hallucinations, and even delirium tremens (DTs) can occur. Medical intervention is usually required to remain safe.
At Muse, we offer medical detoxification, overseen by a clinical nursing staff. Prescription medications are given to help keep patients safe and comfortable during their detox. Medically assisted treatment is especially important with alcohol withdrawal because of its dangerous detox side effects. After the 72 hour mark, you should begin to feel better, with the alcohol out of your system in a few days, depending on factors like age, weight, metabolism, how much alcohol you had been drinking and for how long. With our medically assisted treatment, your alcohol detox should be as pain-free as possible, and with our 24-hour clinical care, you will remain safe.
