How to Stay Sober on a Saturday Night

Staying sober is a challenge, but it’s also fun with the right sober activities. Here are several tips on how to stay sober on a Saturday night.

If you’re fighting to stay sober, you’re going to find that just about every day of the week is going to be challenging for you.

But Saturdays can prove to be especially problematic for those who are just starting off on their quest to lead a sober lifestyle. Staying sober on a Saturday night, in particular, might be one of the toughest things you need to do at the beginning of your journey.

Fortunately, you can increase your chances of abstaining from drugs and/or alcohol by learning how to stay sober on a Saturday night. By filling your Saturday nights with certain types of activities, you can keep your mind off your ongoing battles with addiction.

Here are some tips that should make it slightly easier to keep yourself clean on Saturday nights.

Surround Yourself With the Right People

The last thing you want to do on a Saturday night when you’re trying to stay sober is sit in your house all night long by yourself. The boredom alone could potentially push you back in the direction of your addiction.

Instead of isolating yourself, find a friend or family member who is available and spend time with them on Saturday nights. Better yet, make it your mission to spend time with someone new each and every Saturday night.

One Saturday night, you might hang out with your best friend and walk around at the mall. The next Saturday night, you might go see your grandmother in a neighboring town.

The goal should be to surround yourself with people who know your struggle and understand that you need to stay busy to avoid temptation. They’ll help support you and shoulder some of the burden as you work your way back from your addiction.

Consider Volunteering Your Time for a Good Cause

A lot of former drug and alcohol addicts are able to transform their lives after a stint in rehab by volunteering their time to a good cause.

When you’re struggling with addiction, it’s hard to find much meaning in life. It’s why people end up stuck in a vicious cycle that won’t allow them to escape.

Volunteering will put meaning back into your life right away and make you rethink the way you’re living. It’ll be easier to push temptation away when you know you have people counting on you.

You can volunteer at a soup kitchen, a church, or any number of other places on a Saturday night to stay sober. Over time, you’ll appreciate having the opportunity to volunteer every bit as much as people appreciate you putting in the time and effort to help others.

Take a Trip to the Movies

One of the easiest ways to stay sober on the weekend is to take a trip to the movie theater. It’s a great way to escape your normal life and lose yourself in a good flick.

Whether you like action movies, rom-coms, or documentaries, you can likely find a whole host of movies playing in your city on any given night. A movie will get your mind off your battles with addiction and allow you to enjoy yourself for a while in the process.

Lose Yourself in Your Love for Video Games

There’s a reason why more than 1 billion people play video games every year. They’re fun and an excellent option for those who don’t have anything better to do with their time at any given moment.

If you have a few free hours on a Saturday night and don’t want to spend them thinking about how hard it is to stay sober, press play on your favorite video game. Within just a few minutes, you’ll forget all about whatever temptation you were facing before.

You do want to be careful about playing too many video games. Video game addiction is a very real thing and affects millions of people all over the world every day.

But as long as you’re able to control yourself while playing games, you’re much better off sitting in front of the TV or computer screen than trying to occupy your free time with something else.

Participate in a Sports League

Do you love to play basketball? Or have you always enjoyed hitting the bowling lanes?

Most cities have sports leagues that adults can join, regardless of their talent level. You can likely find a basketball or bowling league near your home that you can take part in on Saturday nights.

The great thing about getting involved in a sports league is that you know you’ll have something to do every Saturday night once you sign up. You won’t have to spend time coming up with activities to keep your mind and body occupied every week.

Schedule Something Fun on Sunday Mornings

How are your Sunday mornings looking these days?

Filling your Sunday mornings could be key to staying sober on Saturday nights. If you can find something you look forward to doing on Sunday mornings, you’ll be less likely to get yourself into any trouble on Saturday nights.

Consider joining a running club on Sunday mornings and getting up bright and early to get a workout in. Or think about attending a church on Sunday mornings and getting in touch with your spiritual side.

Whatever you do, avoid leaving your Sunday mornings wide open. It could give you the impression that you can do whatever you want on Saturday nights without facing any consequences.
