Mat Addiction Treatment For Residents Of Los Alamitos
Quitting drugs or alcohol can be more complicated than “just stopping”. There can be health risks, and it may feel uncomfortable or painful. Sometimes the withdrawal symptoms from quitting drugs can escalate and become life-threatening. The safest way to stop using drugs is through a medically assisted treatment (MAT) program.
Medically assisted treatment (MAT) for drugs and alcohol is available for residents of Los Alamitos at Muse Treatment. It is a program that combats the physical ailments that come with quitting drugs, along with behavioral health, dual diagnosis, and clinical care with medical oversight for an integrated, whole-patient centered treatment.
MAT can create a base for your long-term, sustained recovery, long after finishing detox and rehab.
What is MAT?
At Muse Treatment Alamitos, our medically assisted treatment (MAT) is a detox treatment plan that will help our patients stop using drugs safely and as comfortably as possible. It combines the use of medications, counseling, behavioral therapy and clinical care.
As the drugs or alcohol leaves your bloodstream, withdrawal symptoms begin. Treatment differs depending on which drug you are detoxing from. Medications like methadone can be given during MAT to help stop a person’s cravings for heroin, for example. Other medications are given to help with sleep, anxiety, depression, and other physical symptoms. These medications are used to mitigate symptoms, but do not get you high or cause a new addiction, when used at prescription amounts under the care of our nursing staff. Counselling is usually introduced early in the process as well, to help with any emotional needs the patient may have.
MAT has been proven to reduce the risk of relapse, as it focuses on the whole patient and the underlying cause of addiction, rather than only the physical symptoms of withdrawal.
What to Expect During MAT?
When you first enter our Muse detox program, you will be interviewed about your medical history and drug use, screened for any medical or psychological conditions, and we will find out a little about you, your goals for detox and rehab, and your future plans. This is all so we can figure out what treatment programs will work best for you, find out if you require a dual diagnosis treatment, and see which medications you may need during detox.
You will then check in to our detox facility. Depending on the drug, withdrawal symptoms can show up as quickly as two to six hours after your last use. They will get worse for the next couple days, peaking at 72 hours, and then you will begin to feel better again.
Your symptoms will vary, depending on factors like:
- What substance you are detoxing from
- Did you use more than one substance at the same time
- How much were you using at once
- How were you using the substance (pills, snorting, needles, etc)
- Genetics and family history
- Mental health and other medical factors
Withdrawal symptoms also vary depending on what drug you were taking. Some common withdrawal symptoms include:
- Headaches and body aches
- Fatigue or insomnia
- Nausea or stomach pain
- Intense drug cravings
To counteract these symptoms, an FDA approved prescription amount of medication can be given to you to stop dangerous symptoms from occurring, quench drug cravings, and help ease pain, insomnia and mental health issues.
Alongside the physical aspect of detoxing, there is also behavioral therapy and counselling provided. This is introduced early in the process, because emotional or traumatic feelings can come up when the drugs leave your system. This help will continue into one of our inpatient rehabilitation programs. After detoxing, the minimum recommended time to spend in residential rehab is 30 days, followed by an extended outpatient and alumni program.
MAT focuses on the whole patient, rather than only the physical symptoms of withdrawal. Because of this, it has been proven to improve a patient’s survival rate, and their ability to live an independent, self-directed life, without the use of drugs or alcohol. At Muse, we want to offer support and ensure you feel confident and ready to take on the world, long after you complete our detox program. You will be equipped with healthy coping strategies, a new sober community, and a new outlook on life.
