What Is United Healthcare Insurance & How Does It Work?

United Healthcare Insurance is a nationwide insurance company in the United States, with a wide variety of health insurance plans to choose from. Each plan has its own rules and stipulations regarding coverage amounts, deductibles, and copays, meaning that some insurance plans will cover more types of medical care, behavioral health care, and addiction treatment than others will.

If you are dealing with addiction, it can feel overwhelming to try and decipher your insurance coverage. At Muse, we are happy to help you understand all of your options clearly before you make any decisions when it comes to your rehabilitation. Please phone us if you have any questions about your insurance and how it will apply to addiction treatment. We may be able to clarify your individual insurance plan and make planning easier for you.

What Are United Healthcare’s Types of Plans?

United Healthcare offers plans like tri-term insurance, short-term insurance, student insurance, workplace insurance, and individual or family Affordable Care Act (ACA) coverage. They also offer COBRA, self-employed health insurance, travel insurance, Medicare and Medicaid plans, and term life insurance. You can even purchase supplemental plans like dental or vision insurance. There are HMO, PPO, POS, and EPO options within the above categories as well, with some requiring you to visit in-network providers, while others will allow you to see the provider of your choice. In most cases, the plans that cost the most bi-monthly or per month are the plans that will give you the most options and coverage when you need to use them, while the plans with a lower monthly cost will have higher deductibles to meet or have more stipulations placed on their use.

Does United Healthcare Insurance Cover Alcohol & Drug Rehab Treatment?

Yes, your United Healthcare Insurance plan will cover alcohol and drug rehab treatment. There have been several acts passed that have determined that mental health and behavioral health treatments, including addiction treatments, are to be legally considered essential health care. Under most plans, treatments like medical detox, interventions, family counseling, clinic visits, and other services will be covered along with inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation. These acts have also ruled that insurance companies are not allowed to discriminate or charge more for these types of services than they would for a hospital visit or other types of care.

It is important to remember that the coverage varies based on individual plans. Some have a deductible amount that you will need to pay before your coverage takes over, while others may have copay amounts that you have to pay during every visit to your provider. Your coverage amount may also depend on whether your provider is in-network or not. You may wish to verify your coverage before starting your treatment so there will be no financial surprises waiting for you.

How to Check Your United Healthcare Insurance Coverage

Because there are so many different types of insurance offered by United, it can sometimes be challenging to figure out what your individual health plan will pay for, and the costs you will still be responsible for, which is why at Muse we are happy to answer any questions you may have. You can call us for help deciphering your coverage, or to begin the assessment process, which will give us a better idea of what your treatment plan will cost overall.

You can also call the phone number on the back of your insurance card and speak with an insurance representative. The people at United are happy to help as well and will explain what is and what is not covered, or to what degree each treatment will be paid for by your insurance. Another helpful option you have is to log in to your health plan account online, click on “Benefits & Coverage”, and review the services and treatments covered by your individual plan on your own.

What Does United Healthcare Insurance Cover?

United Healthcare coverage greatly depends on which insurance plan you have, but in general, you can expect coverage for visits to the hospital, medical care, lab work, mental and behavioral health services, prescription medications, addiction services and rehabilitation programs, maternity care, some types of medical devices, and some costs associated with cancer treatment. You may also have dental and eye care included in your coverage. Most United Healthcare policies do not cover alternative medicine or cosmetic surgeries.

Does United Healthcare Insurance Cover Mental Health & Substance Abuse Treatment?

Yes, your United Healthcare Insurance must provide mental health and substance abuse treatment, as these are considered essential health services. Depending on your benefits, along with addiction treatment, you may also have access to in-person therapy sessions, behavioral health treatments, virtual appointments with counselors or therapists, and access to a mobile app for support. You may either have partial or full coverage for your treatments, as many United insurance plans exceed the minimum coverage thresholds. Your wellness comes first.

Does United Healthcare Insurance Cover Inpatient Drug & Alcohol Rehab?

Yes, many of the United Healthcare Insurance policies will pay for some or all of your stay inside a rehabilitation center, as long as it is recommended by a doctor as the best route for you to take. Inpatient treatment involves staying inside the treatment center full-time, usually for 30 to 90 days, with structured daily living, therapy, counseling, process groups, life skills programs, and more provided daily, along with nutritious food, exercise programs, and more, including holistic programming that is designed to help you learn new ways to reduce stress and heal your body, mind, and spirit. The amount of coverage and types of treatments paid for will depend on the state you are in, as well as the type of plan you have. HMOs, for example, will also stipulate that you get treatment at an in-network facility, treatments like acupuncture may not be covered, or your time inside the treatment center may be limited to a certain number of weeks.

Does United Healthcare Insurance Cover Intensive Outpatient Alcohol & Drug Rehab?

Yes, United Healthcare Insurance will pay for some or all of the costs associated with an intensive outpatient program (IOP). IOPs are flexible treatment plans that are a good option for people with milder addictions and a safe, stable place to live, and for those who cannot enter inpatient treatment due to at-home obligations like childcare or work. IOPs usually range from 10 to 20 hours per week of treatment and can last for up to 90 days on average, with groups, medical care, one-on-one therapy, case management services, and more.

Does United Healthcare Insurance Cover Partial Hospitalization?

Yes, some United Healthcare Insurance plans offer full or partial coverage for a partial hospitalization program (PHP). These are outpatient day programs, offering a high degree of structure and similar programming to inpatient rehab while allowing patients to return home in the evenings and on days off. They are an excellent option for people who require strong support as they work to achieve long-term sobriety.

How Long Will United Healthcare Insurance Cover Alcohol & Drug Rehab?

Every plan has its timeline allotments for addiction rehab coverage. It is often determined by the patient’s needs, the doctor’s recommendations, the type(s) of substances that were being used (and for how long), the type of plan you have, and whether the insurance company deems the treatments offered as appropriate and necessary to your recovery. Some plans, for example, will pay for 6 weeks of inpatient treatment, while others will cover a long-term 90-day period. At Muse, our team will work with your insurance company to figure out the best use of your insurance, while getting you the right types of treatment for your unique needs.
