The Difference Between Outpatient and Inpatient Rehab

If you’ve made the decision to go to rehab, you’ll want to choose between an outpatient and inpatient program. Read on to learn their differences and which may be best for someone suffering from addiction.

America is in the grips of an addiction epidemic. For families and friends of drug and alcohol abusers, the statistics can be incredibly discouraging.

Drug overdose deaths have increased in all 50 states. Drug poisonings, also called overdoses, now kill more people in America every year than car accidents and guns.

And those numbers continue to climb.

While every addiction is deadly, the opiate overdose statistics are terrifying. Heroin overdoses recently quadrupled in a five-year period.

It’s more important than ever to get you and your loved ones the best help possible. Sometimes families and loved ones hit a wall when it comes to deciding on an approach.

Unfortunately, that confusion can delay entering you or a loved one in recovery. But there are benefits to both outpatient and inpatient rehab programs for any clients.

We can help find the right approach for you. First, we’ll explain how important treatment is to getting better.

Here ‘s why:

How Treatment Works

The goal of any treatment is to give the client the best possible chance of long-term recovery. Treatment has been shown to greatly improve each client’s chance of success.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse encourages a treatment plan for all patients. They make some valuable notes on treatment and how it works.

  • For treatment to be effective it will address all of the patient’s needs, not just his or her drug use.
  • For patient success, staying in treatment long enough is critical.
  • Treatment plans should be reviewed often. Then modified to fit the changing needs of each patient.
  • Other possible mental disorders should be addressed during treatment.
  • Detox is only the first stage of treatment.
  • To be effective, treatment doesn’t need to be voluntary.

They also say that “no single treatment option is right for everyone.”

Once you realize how important an individualized treatment plan is, it’s important to weigh the options and get expert help.

Selecting between inpatient and outpatient options means understanding the benefits of each.

Inpatient Rehab

One of the biggest differences between inpatient and outpatient rehab is the living situation and duration required.

With inpatient rehab, the resident lives in the facility for an extended period of time. The 28-day rehab many are familiar with follows this model.

Although, in reality, different cases will require different lengths of stay for the best chance of recovery.

An inpatient rehab gives each client a safe drug- and alcohol-free environment to start their recovery. Free from outside stresses and temptations, they are given a jump start on their clean time.

The daily schedule can include more therapy and support than an outpatient approach can. In fact, some treatment plans will migrate from inpatient to outpatient treatment as part of a step process.

Typically more expensive than outpatient plans, an inpatient approach offers 24-hour care and support at the site. Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), for individuals with more severe addictions, are offered through inpatient rehab program where attendees are closely monitored while taking advantage of prescribed pharmaceutical medications designed to ease the detox and withdrawal process.

But, outpatient rehab has definite advantages too.

Outpatient Rehab

Unlike inpatient care, an outpatient rehab client will continue to live at home during treatment. They may even attend work or school outside of treatment hours.

This approach is often better for individuals who are capable of building their own recovery support systems. The combination of internal support from the treatment facility allows clients to begin integrating recovery into their daily life as quickly as possible.

Outpatient treatment offers groups, counseling, relapse prevention, education, and a wealth of support services for each client. These treatment programs are typically less expensive than inpatient.

Regardless of an inpatient or outpatient rehab, many clients will have to detox prior to entering into treatment.

A good detox plan will help create a foundation for treatment to work.

Detox

In both cases, clients may need to undergo drug detox and be detoxed medically prior to treatment. Depending on the severity of the physical addiction, this may require a hospital stay or treatment visit to be completed under medical supervision.

As with all aspects of addiction and recovery, this will depend on the individual’s treatment plan. However, creating a solid path to recovery often includes a period of detoxification to assist the chances of long-term success.

Between getting medical help and expert support afterward, it’s often important to consult experienced advisors when choosing the right plan for you or a loved one.
